Although inclement weather hit the D.C. Metro area on Jan. 11, the bi-monthly GEOINTeraction Tuesday networking event went on as planned. Mr. Barry Barlow, Director, Acquisition Directorate, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency served as the guest speaker. Mr. Barlow is responsible for systems engineering, program management and contracts management for the development and deployment of the National System for Geospatial Intelligence (NSG) worldwide, and for delivering systems and solutions to meet warfighter and intelligence agency needs. His address focused on on-line/on-demand information, specifically using apps to achieve new NGA Director, Letitia A. Long’s vision of this. Barlow divulged into what he’s looking for from industry partners in order to achieve this, specifically a set of standards for systems and databases to provide access to on-line/on-demand information; how to prepare for an unknown demand of this information; modernizing infrastructure; and replacing the growing amount of NGA employees who (in the next few years), will be eligible for retirement. He also noted that Director Long is hoping to be able to show something implemented from her vision at this year’s GEOINT 2011 Symposium. Concluding his speech, Mr. Barlow highlighted the challenges NGA has overcome in the past with the help of industry such as the ability to access multiple sources of information from one desk. GEOINTeraction Tuesday closed with a brief Q&A with audience members and Mr. Barlow. The next GEOINTeraction Tuesday is scheduled for 8 MARCH.
