Lauren Maloney: The 2020 Lt. Michael Murphy Award

Lauren Maloney: The 2020 Lt. Michael P. Murphy Award in Geospatial Intelligence was awarded to Lauren Maloney, currently completing an interdisciplinary Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security (GEOINT) at Penn State (PSU). Originally from Virginia, she completed her undergraduate work at Syracuse University, and soon after received an Air Force commission through the USAF Officer Training School.

“Studying GEOINT at Penn State has given me the tools and experience I need to deliver results in both my civilian and military careers. As a full motion video analyst for BAE Systems, I use my GEOINT skill set every day to generate an understanding of complex relationships and patterns of life. In my role as senior training coordinator for my team, I pass my knowledge on to new analysts, instilling an appreciation for geospatial concepts,” said Maloney.

As the Deputy Chief of Intelligence for Westover Air Reserve Base, supporting a global airlift mission, Maloney’s passion for GEOINT allowed her to introduce a geospatial perspective for threat analysis.

“Whether I am preparing aircrews to fly into austere locations or personnel to deploy overseas, I am able to incorporate GEOINT into every aspect of my work, ensuring the warfighters I support are prepared for the threats they may encounter.”

The Murphy Award is named for Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a distinguished Penn State alumnus. Murphy was killed June 28, 2005, by enemy forces during a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan. For his selfless leadership and courageous actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The Murphy Award recognizes achievement by a Penn State graduate who is serving or has served in the U.S. Armed Forces or Intelligence Community. Recipients are chosen based upon demonstration of exceptional contributions to the GEOINT discipline.

The generosity of USGIF, Maxar, and faculty, staff, and friends of Penn State contributed to endowing the Murphy Award. Since its inception in 2010, 14 endowed scholarships have been presented to deserving men and women.
